The Prophet's ﷺ grave
The Prophet ﷺ is buried in Aisha's room under the Green Dome, with Abu Bakr and Umar beside him. Visitors pass in front of it to give salam.
History and Seerah
Aisha said his grave was not made prominent for fear it would be taken as a place of worship (Bukhari 1390). Umar asked Aisha's permission to be buried beside his two companions, and she agreed (Bukhari 1392). The dome above the room was first built in 678 AH and has been green since 1253 AH (1837).
Visitor tips
Walk past calmly, face the grave and say: As-salamu alayka ya Rasulallah, then greet Abu Bakr and Umar. When anyone greets him, Allah returns his soul so he can return the greeting (Abu Dawud 2041, Hasan). Make du'a facing the Qibla, not the grave; don't wipe the walls or raise your voice. Your salawat reach him wherever you are (Abu Dawud 2042, Sahih). Scholars differ on women visiting graves: women can give salam from wherever they are, and should ask their group's scholar.
