Questions & answers
Umrah and Hajj: questions and answers
Permits and visas
Do I need a permit for Umrah?
Yes. Umrah permits are issued free in the Nusuk app. Booking a visit to the Rawdah in Madinah is also done in Nusuk.
Can I perform Hajj without a Hajj permit?
No. Hajj needs an official Hajj permit, and the authorities check and fine people without one. Register through Nusuk or your country's Hajj office.
Which visas allow Umrah?
Besides the Umrah visa, many other Saudi visas allow Umrah with a Nusuk permit. Rules change, so check the Saudi eVisa site and Nusuk before you travel.
Tawaf and Sa'i
I lost count of my laps. What do I do?
Go with the smaller number you are sure of and complete from there. This follows the Prophet's ﷺ guidance on doubt in prayer (Muslim 571). The counter in this app helps you avoid it.
Do I need wudu for Tawaf and Sa'i?
Tawaf: most scholars say wudu is required; the Hanafis say it is obligatory but Tawaf is still valid without it. Sa'i: wudu is recommended but not required.
The prayer starts while I am doing Tawaf. What do I do?
Stop and join the congregational prayer, then continue your Tawaf from where you stopped. Many scholars say you do not need to restart the lap.
Is Tawaf on the upper floors valid?
Yes, the upper floors and roof are part of the mosque. The laps are longer, but they are less crowded and have wheelchair routes.
Can I do more than one Umrah on my trip?
Scholars differ. Many allow repeating Umrah by going out to a place like Masjid Aisha (al-Tan'eem) for ihram. Others prefer doing extra Tawaf instead of repeating Umrah in the same trip.
Ihram
Can I use a belt, watch, glasses or umbrella in ihram?
Yes, most scholars allow these. Unscented soap and shampoo are also fine. Avoid anything perfumed.
I did something forbidden in ihram by mistake. What now?
Many scholars say there is no penalty for things like perfume or clothing done by mistake or without knowing, as long as you stop once you realise. Doing it on purpose needs a compensation (fidyah, Quran 2:196). Ask a scholar about your case.
Family and others
Is Umrah or Hajj valid for a child?
Yes. It is valid and the parents are rewarded (Muslim 1336). The obligatory Hajj is still due after the child reaches puberty.
Can I perform Umrah or Hajj for someone else?
Yes, for someone who has died or cannot physically go, as long as you have done your own first (Abu Dawud 1811).
Is visiting Madinah part of Hajj or Umrah?
No. It is a separate visit to the Prophet's Mosque, with great reward, but your Hajj or Umrah is complete without it.
Practical help
Can I get a wheelchair at the Haram?
Yes. Free wheelchairs are available at Masjid al-Haram and at the Prophet's Mosque (Gate 7). Masjid al-Haram also has electric carts, mainly for the elderly and people with disabilities; ask the staff whether a fee applies.
I am lost or separated from my group.
Stay calm and go to the nearest staff member or guidance desk. Show your safety card in this app (hotel name in Arabic). Call 1966 for pilgrim care inside Saudi Arabia, or 911 in an emergency.
Can I take Zamzam water home?
Yes. Buy sealed Zamzam bottles from authorised sellers and check your airline's rules for carrying them.
