Marr al-Zahran (Wadi Fatimah)

Seerah journeysHistorical

The valley north of Makkah where the Muslim army camped the night before the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH.

History and Seerah

When the Prophet ﷺ marched on Makkah in the year of the conquest, Abu Sufyan, Hakim ibn Hizam and Budayl came out for news and reached Marr al-Zahran, where they saw so many fires they said they were like the fires of Arafah. They were brought to the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Sufyan became Muslim; the army then passed before him tribe by tribe (Bukhari 4280). The valley, known today as Wadi Fatimah, runs past al-Jumum.

The event is authentic; this exact spot is a local tradition, not a certain one.
